Steven Carmichael sat behind the wheel, his red hands resting in his lap, his face blank as if had been unplugged from the mains. Rainwater slid down the windscreen turning the trees beyond into smudges of green. A man wandered past the front of the car and then stood at the edge of the pond before grabbing a handful of stale bread from a plastic carrier bag. The swans and ducks squawked and paddled across the surface of the water in a mad lunge to get at the free meal.

Steven blinked and clicked on the wipers and the view sprang into life, the man glanced over his shoulder and frowned before turning back to the water.

Carmichael took a huge sigh and looked down at his hands before wiping them aimlessly on the front of his trousers.

He tried to recall Andrew Reece's face and found that he couldn't, all his mind would reveal was his own hand plucking the heavy stone from the rockery and then smashing it down onto the back of Reece's head as he turned in the hallway to run.

Steven swallowed and closed his eyes as the heavy thud and squelch echoed through his head. He had no idea if Reece was alive or dead and the truth was he didn't care. Turning the key in the ignition, he started the car and switched on the heater as a shiver that had little to do with the cold ran through him.

The voice from the radio suddenly filled the small space.

'Breaking news, the police have just revealed that the man known as Robert Bush is still alive and at large. It had been believed that Bush had committed suicide at his family home though this now appears not to have been the case.'

Steven looked down at the radio his mouth hanging open in shock as he listened to the reporter whisper his worst nightmare directly into his frozen brain.

'I take it the police are keen to talk to him about the death of Molly Carmichael?' the voice from the studio asked.

'I think we can assume that will be a priority for them, Emma'.

'And they have no idea of his whereabouts? '

'I asked Superintendent Mills the same question and he seemed reluctant to answer. He did however say that all resources were being utilised to catch the man responsible for Molly's death though he refused to make a direct link between Bush's disappearance and the death of the young girl.'

Steven lurched forward and switched the radio off with a shaking hand.

The words 'Bush is still alive' seemed to cavort through his mind in letters a thousand feet tall. Shaking his head Steven slapped his blood-stained hands on the steering wheel, the anguish roared through his head, dragging blind fury with it.

Slamming the car into gear he lurched forward, the engine stalled and the car rolled forward across the car park. The man feeding the ducks turned and watched as the engine fired into life and bolted off the car park, the wheels squealing, black smoke pouring from the tortured tyres.
